	ASHTON 1935
Title	Harbour glimpse
Description	Sir John WIlliam (Will) 1881-1963 son of James Ashton. He migrated to Adelaide with his parents and was educated at Prince Alfred College in 1889-97, then did odd jobs in his father's studio and studied drawing part time. He met Hans Heysen, who became a lifelong friend. In 1900 Will left for England to work under the seascapist Julian Olsson at St Ives, Cornwall. He spent the winter of 1902-03 at the Académie Julian, Paris, with E. Phillips Fox, David Davies and Heysen. In 1904 Ashton had work accepted by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français, Paris, but next year he returned to Adelaide. The sale of 'Boulevard Montparnasse, Paris' for 150 guineas to the National Gallery of South Australia enabled him to marry May Millman (d.1958), one of his students, on 31 January 1906 at Christ Church, North Adelaide. After holding successful exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, in 1908 he won the Wynne prize for landscape. In 1912-14 he painted in Britain, Europe and Egypt. Back in Australia for a year, he felt his prospects were better overseas, and took his family to London in 1915. Prevented by an arthritic condition from joining the Australian Imperial Force, he became a voluntary driver. He won the Wynne prize in 1930 and in 1939. Will Ashton had worked mainly in oils from about 1910.

	ASHTON 1938
Title	King's Tableland, Blue Mountains
Description	JULIAN HOWARD ASHTON 1877-1964, journalist, critic and artist son of Julian Rossi Ashton. Arrived in australia with his family in 1878. In 1883 the family moved to Sydney where Ashton attended Bondi Public School and Sydney Boys' High School. He was 'brought up in a Bohemian home': his interests were musical, artistic and literary. In 1896-1903 he attended his father's art school where he met Mary Ethel Roberts, whom he married in 1908. Represented in the NSW and VIC State galleries. Signed his works Howard Ashton. 	BAKER 1890
Title	Wairarapa.
Description	William George Baker 1864-1929 Born in Wellington, second generation New Zealander, his grandfather having come to New Zealand aboard the 'Lady Nugent' in 1840. He attended school in Wellington and originally worked as an upholsterer. Although without formal art training he began exhibiting in 1883 firstly with the Fine Arts Association and then the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts 1884-1904. His work was also seen at the Otago Arts Society from 1893-1898, the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition in 1885 and the St Louis Exposition in 1904. Waipoua River, Masterton At the turn of the century he became a professional artist, touring the country seeking suitable subjects and painting a great deal in the Wairarapa and the Southern Lakes District. Up until 1902 he had painted only in oils but after this he also painted in watercolours exhibiting at agricultural shows and holding auctions of his works in various towns. 	BREES 1880
Title	New Zealand Lake Scene.
Description	Painter, cartoonist, lithographer, architect and surveyor, born in London, son of the artist and architect Samuel Charles Brees. After living in New Zealand and revisiting London, Brees came to Sydney in 1858. There, according to the architect J.J. Davey, he was employed for a time in the NSW Public Works and Lands Departments as an architectural draughtsman, simultaneously managing 'a little private work as they all did' - and a considerable amount of watercolour painting. As well as designing and supervising the erection of buildings such as St Andrew's Lodge of Freemasons in Clarence Street (1874), Brees did the sort of commercial work that helped keep artists alive in Sydney. In 1880 a pamphlet promoting 'the beauties and attractions of Newport, Pittwater and the celebrated Hawkesbury lakes' was published as a real estate promotional venture with nine lithographs by S.T. Leigh & Co. after watercolours by Brees. The 'plan and local sketch of the new marine township of Newport' appended was presumably also his work. Brees won seventh prize (£5) in a competition held by the printers and stationers Gibbs, Shallard & Co. in 1882 for a set of three paintings: Harold Brees died at his home, 7 Ormond Street, Paddington, on 28 April 1904, aged sixty-six.
