The Meiji period so named for the 45-year reign of the Meiji Emperor (from 23 October 1868 to 30 July 1912). It was during this period that Japan began its modernization and and rose to world power status. The word Meiji means 'Enlightened Rule'.

KONO BAIREI 1844-1895
Painter, illustrator and art teacher born and active in Kyoto. He was a member of the Ukiyo-e school, which depicted birds and flowers in the Meiji period. He studied Japanese style painting with Nakajima Raisho in 1852 and and after Raisho's death with the Shijo-school master Shiokawa Bunrin. In 1880 he opened his own art school and his students included Takeuchi Seihô, Kawai Gyokudô and Uemura Shôen. Bairei is famous for his album, "One Hundred Birds" printed in 1881. In 1893 he was made a member of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household. |
