named the sslands in honour of King Charles II his
master.

Remained a Spanish possession until 1898.
FIJI

Also known as the Friendly Islands, the name given by Captain Cook.

The first Europeans to arive were the Dutch explorers Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire in 1616, who called on the northern island of Niuatoputapu, and Abel Tasman, who visited Tongatapu and Ha'apai in 1643. Captain Cook arrived in 1773 and the first London missionaries in 1797.
