Sydney began its life as a penal colony in 1788.

Transportation of convicts to New South Wales was finally abolished in 1840 and shortly afterwards, in 1842, Sydney was declared a city.

SYDNEY CBD

Sydney was first claimed by Governor Phillip on th 26th January, 1788 at Sydney Cove which is now called Circular Quay.

Sydney's CBD extends south for about 3 kilometres from Circular Quay and "The Rocks", in the eastern side it bordered by a parkland that extends from Hyde Park through to the Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens, Farm Cove then on to the harbour. The west side extends to Darling Harbour and Central station marks the southern end of the CBD.
