Victoria's first settlement was at Portland, on the west coast of what is now Victoria, Melbourne was founded in 1835 by John Batman.

In 1851 gold was discovered at Ballarat, and subsequently at Bendigo. Later discoveries occurred at many sites across Victoria. This triggered one of the largest gold rushes the world has ever seen.

MELBOURNE CBD

Melbourne was founded on the mouth of the Yarra River in 1835 after an abortive bid in 1803 to establish a settlement inside the Port Phillip Bay heads. In 1837 the township of Melbourne was surveyed and named and a magistrate, Captain William Lonsdale, was sent from Sydney to maintain law and order.
